Program Preview:
Using a wide variety of picture books, award-winning educational consultant, Laura Beltchenko, will share ways to pair picture books and create text sets that expand critical thinking as well as extend the joy many children have in reading books that have similar themes, concepts or on the same topic.
Pairing text develops a metacognitive processes beckoning students to analyze and comprehend explicit as well as inferred meaning while finding and making the connections between the books. This session will present a wide variety of books and genres to help you develop your own text sets for young readers. A bibliography will be shared supporting literary analysis and inquiry based critical and creative thinking...and a bit of poetry will be added for good measure!
Age group focus: Kindergarten - Grade 5
Professional Development Hour: Participants who attend sessions and complete the required sign in, sign out, and evaluation sheets are eligible to receive 1 PD Hour Credit.
About the Presenter:
Laura Beltchenko is veteran educator with a passion for student motivation and engagement in all thing’s literacy. Her career in public education includes classroom teacher, reading specialist, as well as teacher and coordinator of gifted programs. Her public education career culminated as an associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction for a K-12-unit school district.
