IMSA's Day of Service

Fox Valley Organizations Benefit from Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy's Day of Service IMSA-Buschbacher 08/21/08
Before classes had even begun for the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy's (IMSA) newest sophomore class, 250 members of IMSA's Class of 2011 contributed more than
1,000 hours of community service work to the greater Fox Valley area during IMSA's first Sophomore Navigation Team Building and Day of Service.

IMSA's Day of Service, held on August 15, took 250 sophomores, along with junior and senior student leaders to 14 organizations throughout the greater Fox Valley area.
Organizations served included the following: Aurora West Forest Preserve, Batavia Wildflower Sanctuary, Dick Young Forest Preserve/Nelson Lake, Fran's Fox River Clean Up, Garfield Farm, Hawk's Bluff/Batavia Park District, Hesed House, Holmstad Retirement Center, Living Well Cancer Resource Center, Northern Illinois Food Bank, Peck Farm, Peoples Resource Center, Suicide Prevention Services and VNA of Fox Valley.

IMSA President Dr. Max McGee said IMSA's newest sophomore class not only represent
some of the best and brightest students in Illinois, but also the most hard-working, compassionate and service-minded teens in the state.

"The response IMSA has received from these community organizations has been incredible and we are so pleased that each member of our newest sophomore class has already been able to make a difference in the lives of people and organizations right here in IMSA's own backyard," McGee said. "From sorting and packaging food for the homeless to removing invasive prairie species to scraping and painting, IMSA's young students demonstrated their leadership potential and their commitment to enhancing the human condition, "McGee added.

The internationally recognized Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) develops creative, ethical leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. As a teaching and learning laboratory created by the State of Illinois, IMSA enrolls academically talented Illinois students (grades 10-12) in its advanced, residential college preparatory program. It
also serves thousands of educators and students in Illinois and beyond through innovative instructional programs that foster imagination and inquiry. (www.imsa.edu).

AUGUST 20, 2008

Congressman cuts ribbon at Rockford's Washington Academy United States Congressman Don Manzullo will join Superintendent Linda Hernandez, other dignitaries and an anticipated 1,500 students and parents at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Washington Gifted Academy at 6 p.m. Thursday, August 21, at the school’s front entrance
on West Street.

After the ribbon-cutting, families and school officials will tour the school, where nearly $475,000 in building improvements were made during summer break. Washington, built in 1940 as a junior high school, becomes the site for gifted programs that operated previously
at King Elementary School and West Middle School when students return Monday, August 25, for the start of the 2008-2009 academic year.

Paving work to accommodate an additional 10 buses at Washington accounts for approximately half of the total modification costs. Nearly 800 students who live throughout the Rockford School District are expected to attend Washington, which last year served primarily as a neighborhood school with an enrollment of fewer than 500. New laptop computers have been purchased, the security system has been expanded, gym lockers have been replaced and the gym floor has been refinished, among other upgrades.

Three dozen band, orchestra and vocal students under the direction of Washington teacher John Dixon and parent-singer-actress Jenine Cannell-Puri will perform “A New Day” as part of the ribbon-cutting ceremony. State Senator Dave Syverson and Rockford Alderman Victory Bell also are expected to attend.

Beginning 5 p.m. and continuing while tours take place, families will enjoy hot dogs, Italian beef sandwiches, chips and cookies during a Back-To-School picnic, a tradition for the first- through fifth-grade classes that previously attended King.

Washington has scheduled an Open House from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. October 9 for interested community members or families who wish to have their children tested for admission to the program for 2009-2010.

A Rockford gifted program student scored perfect ACT & SAT scores. [This newspaper article shows how he credits the gifted program and his parents. Also, the high school principal explains his role is to "remove obstacles." The article has many statements that support gifted education and how parents and educators help.-tm for IAGC]

Auburn student Aces ACT & SAT Teen also captained the state champion Scholastic Bowl team
By Jeff Kolkey RRSTAR.COM Posted May 24, 2008

ROCKFORD ‹
...Auburn High School¹s Sivakumar Sundaram...On Friday, a day after the School District announced that the junior had scored a perfect 2,400 on his SAT, Sundaram discovered he had aced his ACT.
...
Sundaram graciously does not take full credit for his success. He points to the Rockford School District¹s gifted program that he¹s been a part of since the first grade. Students take an intelligence test to enter the program and learn at an accelerated pace.

Learning alongside other gifted and academically talented students with teachers who challenged him was the perfect mix of ingredients to push him, Sundaram said.
And although things just come a little easier for Sundaram than most people, years of hard work went into his perfection on the college entrance tests taken in the spring...

“I don¹t know what would have happened to me if I went through a regular education program,” Sundaram said. “The thing about gifted kids is that when they get bored, they get lazy.”

He also credits his parents...for making learning fun for him...”What they were able to do is start me early really enjoying the process of learning and giving me tools to succeed,” Sundaram said. “They never really had to push me to make me do my homework. They¹re not those crazy, psycho parents you might see at the spelling bee.”

Auburn Principal Richard Jancek said he takes pride in leading a school that has produced students capable of perfection on college entrance exams in consecutive years...Jancek said people have asked what his role is in the success of a student like Sundaram. He tells them that it¹s to remove obstacles, to create an environment where they are able to reach for the limits of their potential.

“My job is indirect, setting the stage for the achievement,” Jancek said. “The direct jobs are from the teachers and the parental support and all the hard work and, let¹s face it, there is some God-given talent in there, too.”
