Gifted Education Seminar ~ The Next Step

Individuals interested in deepening their understanding of strategies and concepts introduced in the Gifted Education Seminar will benefit from this course as it supports participants’ efforts to facilitate a year’s growth in gifted learners.  Participants will strengthen their ability to apply key principles of gifted education by examining topics from the following two specific modules of the seminar:           

  • Knowing the Gifted
  • Differentiation

Instructional strategies will be modeled, developed and extended with a focus on strengthening your students’ independence through the use of various differentiation practices including higher level thinking skills, independent study, and student contracts.

 

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Assist gifted students in dealing with both the positive and negative aspects of giftedness.
  • Understand the critical relationship between effort and achievement for gifted learners.
  • Initiate an identification process using district/school procedures
  • Evaluate futuristic scenarios and their application to students’ needs.
  • Gain greater understanding of specific social and emotional issues surrounding gifted students
  • Analyze 21st Century Skills and their application to content lessons for gifted students.
  • Apply current research to promote best instructional practices.
  • Establish appropriate environments for gifted learner.
  • Incorporate various aspects of technology to enhance lessons.
  • Evaluate current issues related to gifted education.
  • Apply differentiation elements and strategies to their classroom setting.
  • Evaluate how the standards of abstract thinking, complexity, and depth promote the development of intellectual traits.
  • Advocate for gifted students.

 

Class will meet:  Monday – Thursday, June 18,19,20,21 2012

From:  8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Taught by:  Barbara McClarty and Cathy Greene

 

Required Materials:  Kingore Text (Differentiation), GES USB Drive (if you took GES during the Pilot with a disc, a flash drive will be provided), Laptop Computer that can support the GES USB drive. Ear buds are recommended.

 

Participants must have completed the Gifted Education Seminar


 

Your Instructors

Barbara McClarty

is a retired veteran educator with 34 years teaching experience, having taught all learners from grades kindergarten through 8th.  Barb has been involved in all aspects of gifted education from developing gifted programs, teaching gifted students, being a gifted specialist for two school districts, to providing gifted professional development for teachers.  She helped create the differentiation portion of the Gifted Education Seminar for the State of Illinois.  She is a member of the Illinois Association for Gifted Children (IAGC).

Cathy Greene is an Educational Consultant specializing in assisting educators and parents in their efforts to improve learning opportunities for children.  As a member of the Illinois Association for Gifted Children (IAGC) Board, and a Co-Chair of the Advocacy Committee, she is a frequent presenter at the IAGC Convention.  Cathy taught for twenty years for the Unit 5 School District, then went on to become the Director of Elementary and Gifted Education for the district.  Her experience provided her with the opportunity to work with all aspects of gifted education from program design through teaching gifted students, evaluating appropriate resources, and developing pre and post assessments.  She was an associate professor at Illinois State University working with pre-service educators before serving as one of the members of the original Design Team for the Gifted Education Seminar.  Cathy co-authored each of the modules of the Gifted Education Seminar as well as the Parent Companion Module. She now works with educators and parents implementing the key concepts of gifted education.
