Mark your calendars for this upcoming session in 2012 at Quest Academy, Palatine:

Deep Comprehension: Teaching

Students to Use Strategic

Literary Processing

(Grades 3-8)

WHAT WILL BE COVERED?

This class will invite participants on a journey through the thinking involved in deeper comprehension. Strategies will be demonstrated to assist teachers in helping students become thoughtful, independent readers who can not only negotiate their way through text, but can also probe the depths of its content and themes. We will also explore the importance of modeling, “think-alouds,” and classroom environment. A special emphasis will include an analysis of the intellectual virtues supported by the Center for Critical Thinking.

WHAT SKILLS WILL THIS HELP DEVELOP?

Upon completion of the class, the learner will be able to:

• demonstrate strategies that lead students to become thoughtful, independent readers.

• deepen comprehension through second-draft reading.

• apply strategies for navigating through fiction and nonfiction text.

• use metaphor to deepen comprehension.

• lead students to meaningful reflection.

• incorporate strategies to bridge the experiential gap of learning.

• interact with biographies to learn the steps of the creative process.

• raise vital questions and problems within a text, formulating them clearly and precisely.

• come to well-reasoned conclusions, testing them against relevant criteria and standards.

• analyze intellectual virtues and their role in thinking.

• provide meaningful feedback to students that supports deeper thinking.
