2012 President’s Committee Goals

On-Going Committees

 

Advocacy Committee - Cathy Green and Susan Rhodes

  1.     Create documents that assist stakeholders in articulating the needs of gifted for use at ISBE Budget Hearings.

  2.      Create documents that assist stakeholders in their efforts to inform legislators throughout the state of the unique needs of gifted students.

  3.     Assist in efforts to inform educators and legislators about the need for gifted endorsement.

  4.     Create and Submit advocacy ideas to be posted on the IAGC webpage and sent monthly to parent affiliate groups for use in their newsletters.

 

Communications - Rosina Gallagher and Joan Franklin Smutny /Consultant: Terry James Mohaupt

  1.     Solicit and submit articles and publish Courier.

  2.     Solicit articles and publish Journal

  3.     Distribute information via e-mail, presentations, websites, social networks, and print and broadcast media.

 

Diverse Gifted Populations - Penny Choice and Laura Paull

  1.     Update DGP website page (on-going)

     a.     Post Outside of the Box video link from you tube.

     b.     Email committee members for input and feedback on the site.

     c.     Make sure the resources from our brochure and on the web site line up.

  2.     Recruit presenters for 2013 IAGC Conference (on-going)

  3.     Continue to provide DGP brochure to be distributed at conference and look at other ways to provide resources to parents such as single topic support from 2E newsletters, etc.

  4.     Contribute at least one article to Courier (by January) and Journal by August 2012.

     a.     Brainstorm a list of ideas with committee.

     b.     Look for volunteers from committee members.

  5.     Conduct IAGC Workshop:  Bullying in Diverse Gifted Communities

     a.     Purpose:

              i.     Increase awareness of bullying among diverse gifted and talented populations and identify ways to meet this challenge.

          ii.     Submit article from conference proceedings to Courier or Journal

  6.     Continue to collaborate with other IAGC committees and their initiatives such as  Parent Academy, Urban committee, Parent Home Schooling, Advocacy.

  7.     Continue to brainstorm ideas on bringing more funding for gifted training in remote areas not easily accessible for training due to location and financial restraints.

  8.     Brainstorm ideas for continuing informational training in this economy.

  9.     Contact all other organizations and institutions related to our committee to add their information to our site and find out how we can help them.

 

Education - Laura Beltchenko, Lori Swan, Dianne (Mini) Woodard, Judy Minor

  1.     Provide functional models of gifted programming appropriate for different levels of funding.

  2.     Provide access to a variety of appropriate lesson plans for gifted children.

  3.     Provide information about exceptional materials and resources for educating gifted children.

  4.     Provide information about appropriate methods for identification of children for gifted programming.

 

Liaisons

Independent/Private Schools – Ben Hebebrand

  1. Goals - TBD

 

ROE-ISC Liaison - Diane Beedy

  1.     Educate the leaders of Regional Offices of Education, ROE/CPS Gifted Gifted Coordinators, about the lack of funding and mandated services for gifted children in Illinois and the lack of certification or endorsement requirements for educators to work with gifted children.

  2.     Solicit the support of Regional Superintendents, Assistant Regional Superintendents and District Gifted Coordinators for certification and/or endorsement in gifted education through statewide meetings and emails.  

  3.     Encourage Regional Office of Education and Chicago Public Schools to deliver the Gifted Education Seminar and the GES Companion Modules and other gifted professional development for educators.

 

Universities Liaison - Paula Olszewski-Kubilius

  1.     Prepare and update annually lists of all the educational programs for gifted children offered by institutions of higher education and circulate to IAGC membership and general public.

  2.     Prepare and update annually lists of all the institutions of higher education that offer coursework or degrees in gifted education and circulate to IAGC membership and general public.

  3.     Make deans and leaders of schools of education in Illinois aware of the activities and services of IAGC.

  4.     Facilitate cooperation and collaboration between IAGC and institutions of higher education in Illinois for the purposes of preparing educators to work with gifted children and to provide services for gifted children and their families.

 

Membership - Terry Mohaupt

  1.     Increase individual, institutional, and parent affiliates by 10%; individual to 600; Institutional to 4; Parent Affiliates (paid) to 6.

  2.     Establish new fee tier for parents in parent affiliates.

  3.     Discount member fees ALL IAGC events.

  4.     Prepare, publish, and promote annual “What did IAGC do [this/last] year” report to show members and prospects reasons to join.

  5.     Follow up on member suggestions to increase value to members.

  6.     Create preferential registration for IAGC events with limited capacity (first to members until specified date, then open to others).

  7.     Find a Co-chair.

  8.     Continue to work monthly with office (Shirley) on record-keeping and reports to board.

  9.     Recruit new prospects and nonmembers lists to join.

10.     Urge lapsed members to renew.

 

Parent Affiliates - Terry Mohaupt

  1.     Have all parent groups join/renew membership.

  2.     Find a Co-chair.

  3.     Make PA e-mail look different from other e-mail messages.

  4.     Put presentations online for groups to access.

  5.     Lead Annual convention parent session.

  6.     Follow up on suggestions from active group leaders.

  7.     Survey group leaders:  “What do you want from IAGC?”

 

Past Presidents - Kris McElligatt

  1.     Goals TBD

 

Professional Development- Sally Walker

  1.     Host GES and GES companion modules in different locations in the state.

  2.     Fill in gaps for professional development where ROEs cannot offer services.

  3.     Develop the cadre of IAGC presenters to work with districts for those ad administrators who have taken the Administrator’s Academy module. Work with Diane Beedy on this.

  4.     Look for grants, business sponsors, and/or partnerships to support professional development on best practice in gifted education, growth gains and the GES with companion modules.

 

Social and Emotional Committee - Michele Kane, Linda Lanphier

  1.     Continue to contribute book reviews and articles featuring social and emotional topics to the Courier

  2.     Collaborate with other committees to design Parent Academies.

  3.     Design and collect curricular materials related to aspects of social and emotional development.

  4.     To develop targeted resources regarding specific issues related to affective development.

 

Technology - Tracey Hosey
